Baby Can I Hold You by Tracy Chapman
So years ago when I lived in Ditmas Park, I rode the F train daily for what seemed like hours. When you ride a train for long durations of time, you get to know the other folks stuck in this hell too. You also get acquainted with the kooks, beggars and standard issue lost cases.
We had three very likable presumably homeless/confirmed down on their luck gentleman you’d see once a week. This one guy was Sonny Payne (SP) who was hungry and homeless (his words). He looked like a lost character from a NYC based sitcom, hopeless and was so sweet my husband and I would generally give him as much as we had in our wallets, which wasn’t much at the time. The other two were nice but werent around as much as Sonny.
And then there was this musician guy who could have been 35 or 50 and obviously not homeless, but certainly lacking in the luck dept. He had long braids, wore all black, including steel toe metal boots and played an electric guitar that was accompanied by a pocket speaker. He would play te same song and sell CDs, which I could only assume were this song played ten - twelve times. We saw him so much that I memorized the song myself. “And you can say baby…” My husband and I were discuss what a cool song it was and how it’s nice, in some bizarre way, that this dude was able to share it with people.
Flash forward a few years ago, my husband and I are out to dinner with a few friends and this song… That guy from the F trains song comes on the radio. We both look at each other and remark that maybe this dude made it. But we knew it wasn’t him singing it and it sounded familiar and one of our friends says, ” this is Tracy Champan. It’s like 20 years old.”
Let’s just say we felt duped.
